The most important thing that I want to start in my classroom is making sure the assessment is matching what I am attempting to measure. I clearly need to understand what I am looking for: knowledge, reasoning, performance and/or skill. From there, I must use the most appropriate type of assessment.
I agree, it's certainly a shift in thinking when you try to match assessment methods to the appropriate learning targets. I found myself wondering why I ever tried assessing a skill or product with a multiple choice question!
