1. The Top Button

The top button is really the power button.

  • Touch the power button to put the iPad into sleep/standby mode
  • Touch the power button to turn the iPad on from sleep/standby mode
  • Touch AND HOLD the power button for 3-5 seconds to power the device on when it is fully shut down.
  • If you feel a need to fully shut down the device, when it is on touch and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds to get a red slider telling you "slide to power off" - slide to power it completely down.

If you are feeling especially brave, touch the power button AND Home button at the same time....you'll take a screen shot of whatever is on your iPad that will be stored in your Photos!

2. The Volume Bar

The Volume bar is on the side of the iPad.  You guessed it!  If you touch the "top" part the volume goes up, and if you touch the "bottom" part the volum goes down.  Another hint: if you touch and hold the down volume, you get a quick mute...

3. The Home Button

The Home button is one of the most important ones to know (Wait! It's one of only three buttons on the device so it MUST be important...).  So what is it used for? Here are a few of its uses.

With a single touch of the button:

  • Turn the device on when it is in standby/sleep mode
  • Leave an app and return to the "home" screen the app is located on
  • Return to the first screen with apps from any other screen (for when you have multiple screens of apps...)
  • Access the search screen when on the first screen
  • Access the first screen of apps when on the search screen

With a double-touch of the button:

  • Bring up a list of all apps that are running (while checking that out, shut some of them down to conserve your battery!)

4. The Mute Button

The button just above the volume bar is the mute button.  (A word to the wise, make sure you mute your iPad before opening something like Angry Birds during a meeting...just saying.)

If you are using your iPad in a situation where you do not want the screen to change orientation (for instance, if you are connected to a projector, or reading a book on it while laying down), the mute button can be set to be the Screen Rotation Lock instead in your System Preferences.

5. The Cameras

(Yes, that is plural - CAMERAS.)

There are TWO cameras on your iPad - one rear-facing and one front-facing.

  • The front facing camera is dead center in the area above the screen (opposite the Home button, if you will; pardon the not so good picture on my black iPad.).
  • The rear facing camera is to the side near the volume controls (please do not try to CENTER an object under your iPad for a picture, it will seriously be skewed to the side...)

6. The Microphone

The microphone is located on the top of the iPad...

7. The Speaker

The speaker is located on the bottom right (or left if you are looking at the backside of it).

8. The Headphone Jack

There is a headphone jack located on the top if you would like to use headphones with your iPad.

9. The Dock Connector Port

The dock connector is the one input/output port on your iPad.  It is where you plug in the USB cord to charge it or sync it to iTunes on your computer (if that is the route you are going...).  It is also where you would plug in any of the adaptor accessories that are available for the iPad:

  • VGA Adaptor (to connect it to your projector via a VGA cable)
  • USB Connector (what you use to charge it either with the adaptor or a computer)
  • HDMI Adaptor (to connect to an HDMI cable)
